woohoo

I did much better on the weight loss train this week. I lost another 2 lbs, which means I'm down a little from where I was 2 weeks ago. I'm still kicking myself about last week's gain, but at least I'm back on track now. So, over the last 2 weeks I've lost 0.5 lbs...not as much as in normal weeks, but a loss is a loss.

I lost another point this week, which actually I lost and gained back last week. I am really struggling to stay under my points target now, and I'm kinda freaking out about staying under it when I stop nursing Scarlett. I'll lose another 6 points in the process of weaning her. So, anyone who has done WW before, what are your favorite zero or low point snacks? Low point meals? How do you find TIME to boost your activity?

Ugh - bad week

I knew this was a bad week, weight wise. I didn't so much overeat, but I ate things that aren't very good for me. It started Saturday with our party - then I had yummies leftover, things that I rarely eat, and things that it's hard to have in my house without eating, things that I enjoy so I didn't want to throw them away. So I totally knew I was setting myself up for a bad week, but I enjoyed the cake, brownies, ice cream, and baked beans anyway. I even ate hot dogs & chips for lunch. I didn't expect to GAIN weight though! I expected to hold steady, and that would have been ok. Gaining...not acceptable.

So today, the rest of the leftovers are going in the trash. (Beth, if you want the brownies get here pronto!)

I do have to pat myself on the back just a little though. Because even though I gained this week, I did much better than the old me would have done. I cut the brownies smaller than normal, and I only ate two per day. Which is like eating less than one of my normal size cuts. And eating ONE of my normal size cuts per day would be an accomplishment, since in the past I would have eaten two or three, sometimes even four, in a day. Seriously, a pan of brownies never lasts from Saturday to Wednesday in our house, much less when it's shared at a party. And it's unheard of that I have leftovers to throw away. While I'm harping on what an accomplishment this is, I should state for the record that David called these "the best batch of brownies I ever made". The time is never exactly what the box says, just because of the way I make them, but these came out perfect...just a smidge undercooked so that they were nice & gooey, but not raw, and a minute more they would have started to get dry. Perfect! We did finish off the cake last night, but a lot of that is due to me sending BIG chunks home with other people. We just didn't have much of it leftover.

So yeah, I gained 1.5 lbs this week, but the old me would have probably gained 5. Maybe more, since the new me went to the gym 3 times, and the old me wouldn't have done that. I am learning some control. That feels good.

how did I manage that?

I haven't figured out how this happened, but this morning when I got on the scale I actually weighed LESS than I did 2 weeks ago! I still don't understand how yesterday I weighed at the gym & weighed more than I did June 26th at the gym (3.8 lbs more) and this morning I weighed 0.5 lbs less than I did June 25th??? Can someone 'splain that to me please?

To add to my confusion, I ended up eating pretty poorly last night. I thought we would ignore my birthday, since I had kind of gotten my own gift. I told David I wanted photography classes for my birthday, he found a class, and I signed up. (I start tomorrow - YAY!) I had also indulged in good food while on vacation, so I didn't *need* cake (who ever does?). BUT, my super wonderful husband got me one anyway. A DQ ice cream cake! He knows they are my favorite! So after eating well all day and planning to have a small ice cream treat later in the evening (that I saved points for), I ate 2, yeah, not one, but two, pieces of ice cream cake. There went ALL my bonus points for the week! I'm exaggerating. I checked the DQ site & 1/8 of the cake is 15 points, so since I had 10 points left after supper, I still have bonus points left! Good thing since we still have cake left over. You know I'm gonna eat a piece of that tonight.

See why I don't believe the scale.

AND AND AND, my super duper wonderful husband, in addition to buying me a DQ ice cream cake AND photography classes, also bought me tickets to see Toby Keith. I have liked his music oh forever, and can't wait to see him live!

Maybe I wasn't as bad as I thought

I am proof that you can splurge every now & then and still lose weight. I was pretty surprised this morning to see that I lost 2 pounds since last week! So surprised that I stepped on & off the scale several times. I won't be dining at the Melting Pot again soon, but I'm pleased that I was able to enjoy it and still see results. One great thing about Weight Watchers is that I haven't yet felt like I was denying myself.

I've been a BAD girl

Whew...first, sorry for the lack of posts lately. My mom arrived last Friday (May 30) then my dad joined us Thursday for a long weekend visit. I dropped them off at the airport this morning. It was such a great week, I will post some things from that soon. First I just have to mention what a bad girl I've been lately. This Weight Watchers stuff has been far easier than I expected. I have developed some great habits, found some healthy snacks, figured out an exercise routine that works for me (most days!), and it's working. In talking to my parents, I realized that David & I have lost Matthew & Scarlett, in weight! No, we haven't LOST Matthew & Scarlett, but we've lost their weights...David has lost what Matthew weighs & I've lost what Scarlett weighs. It's pretty amazing to think of that when I pick them up!

Weight Watchers is very flexible, and I LOVE that about it. David & I snuck in two (yes, two!) date nights while my parents were here. We went to a movie and of course we had to have movie theater popcorn. Somehow the previews just aren't the same without that bag in hand. Yeah, the previews, because my bag always seems to be empty before the feature starts! But that's ok, I don't go back for more because I don't want to miss the movie. On date night 1, we shared a large popcorn at the movie. We did get a diet drink though...surely that balances things out??? ;)

Date night #2 was really a treat - we went to the Melting Pot. Can I just say yummmmmm? We tried to make good choices, but one of the things we agreed to ahead of time was that we were going to really enjoy our meal, and not worry TOO much about the points. The nice thing about fondue is that you pretty much have to eat slowly, so I think that was a big help. We did go "whole hog" though and have the four course meal - cheese, salad, entree, and chocolate. I could have done without the entree, but the cheese & chocolate are to die for. After these date nights, David weighed at the gym yesterday & said he was down 5 lbs from last week when he weighed at the gym. I hope he did manage to lose 5 lbs, but I'm sure I didn't. I'll actually be happy with one pound this week, since I also had mom's meatloaf and homemade mac & cheese. And I missed the gym this morning due to having to get my parents to the airport.

Don't worry though, I'm back on the wagon tomorrow. And actually, I don't think I truly fell off the wagon - I was aware each day of my choices & the consequences. I did try to make the more fattening foods substitutes instead of eating them in addition to my normal things...every little bit helps!

Ultimately, I enjoyed my treats and I'm watching it a little more closely now. I'll get on the scale tomorrow and hopefully see that I lost a little something, then I'm starting a new week - no worries!

Just overweight & a trip down memory lane

A quick update on the weight loss - I'm now "just" overweight instead of obese. With today's weigh in, my BMI dropped into the overweight range. I'm still at the very top of it, but small steps, right?

I think that deserves a little celebration so maybe I'll dig up my running shoes. I haven't used them since July 4, 2005. Almost 3 years. I can remember well that day because it was my last time running the Peachtree Road Race. I remember it well because David & I signed up before we found out we were having Matthew. I am not sure if I would have signed up if I had known I was pregnant, but we just made a good time out of it. We knew we would be slower than normal that year, so we decided to take it easy and really enjoy ourselves. We arrived early so we could watch the wheelchair racers speed by. Then we watched the beginning groups of runners. Those guys (and gals) are fast!!

One of my favorite spots of the race is when you pass the Sheperd Center. It is just past the half-way point of the course, and on probably the hardest section. You see, the course is mostly downhill, but this is a nice long hill that has been fondly nicknamed Cardiac Hill. So here I am, my first year doing the race, I let everyone else's momentum at the start get me carried away, instead of controlling my pace like I did when I trained, I let them dictate my pace. So I wasn't ready for the hill. As I neared the Sheperd Center, I was really tired. I wasn't sure I could go on. But then, I heard the cheers of the patients there. It was overwhelming how supportive they were of all of us who were able to be out there running that day. A lot of the patients are up early to cheer on the wheelchair racers, but they stay out there for us runners too. When I think about how bitter they could be, but then they choose to get out there & cheer for us, I can't help but be overcome with emotion.

A couple of years that we ran the race we lived in a condo just a block from the finish line. It was fun to get finished, go home & shower, then go back to hang out & enjoy the rest of the race. You see, it takes over 2 hours for everyone to START the race, so if you're in one of the first time groups, you can be finished before others even start.

Another favorite memory is from 2002. The race rules state that no costume or headgear is allowed, but there were several firefighters and military personnel who ran the race in full gear. Pretty amazing - I probably couldn't run one mile in all that garb, much less 6.2!

I would love to run the Peachtree again - it was kind of a tradition that we planned to continue even after we moved here, but as you can see we haven't. That year I was pregnant was the last time we followed through with our plan. Logistically it's just hard...David has to take vacation the week of July 4, so we end up visiting family or going somewhere for a "real" vacation, and getting to Atlanta for the race just isn't easily set into those plans. Hopefully we can pick the tradition up again someday. I do miss it.

Weekly Weigh-in

I have the ticker set up that shows my total weight loss, but I'll try to remember to post on weigh in day too. Since last Wednesday I've lost 3.5 lbs, bringing my 3week & 2 days total to 10.5 lbs. I know ideally they say you should average 1-2 lbs/week after the first week, but I'm eating a lot more than I did before I started dieting. It's amazing how much difference healthy choices make.

I'm also exercising almost every day. I have gotten into a good routine of going to the gym and squeezing in time at home, so it is going well.

he only wants the points

I am sorry for not writing more often, between the kiddos & projects I have going on, I've been staying busy away from the computer. Weight watchers is going well - I lost 5 lbs in the first week + 2 days, so I'm very pleased. I know it won't come off that fast every week, the first week is usually the fastest, right? But I'll be happy to lose it a little at a time. I also need to pat myself on the back because I have worked out every day except on the weekend since we started WW. I actually started an exercise program before David joined, but now it is extra motivation to exercise so I can get extra points.

About exercising for points, David went out to lunch yesterday, and ate a HALF-POUND burger! Yes, you read that right! Of couse he has a lot more points than I do so he can occasionally eat a half-pound burger. Anyway, I have some medicine that I put on my hands (for my eczema). I don't use it every day, just at bedtime when my hands are in bad shape. So when I plan to use it and think there's a chance we might, um well, do the deed, I wait & apply it after. Last night I somehow asked him as I was getting ready for bed if I should apply it or wait. Do you know he had the nerve to tell me he needed some exercise points for the day so maybe I should wait?!?!

Great...he doesn't want me, he wants the points! Makes me feel valued. Whatever.

I'm doing it

David has a Weight Watchers "At Work" program available to him, at very little cost. We both need to drop some weight and WW is supposed to be a great way to do it, but our budget is tight. He told me this weekend that he signed up last week and has all of the program materials. He will go to meetings each week and weigh in, and I will track everything at home & just weigh in at home. We waited until today to start since I wanted to do some serious meal planning. When I got on the scale this morning I was STUNNED at the number! I knew I had gained weight between Christmas & now, but I didn't realize JUST HOW MUCH!! I started a new exercise program last week and hopefully between that & WW I will drop that weight & then some. I really want to lose 60 lbs. I used to say 50, until I got on the scale this morning! I've no one to blame but myself.

Today I have used 14 points so far, that leaves me 20 points for a snack & dinner. I also plan to exercise as soon as my lunch settles in. I probably won't "give myself" extra points for the exercise, unless I am just really hungry later. But so far I haven't been hungry at all. I think I'm in good shape for today. I am adding a weight loss ticker so if you want to follow along with my progress you can. I'm sure I'll post about it occasionally too.
